Back in Style

As the school semester nears the
end and graduation seems to be approaching faster than ever, I find myself
constantly thinking about my future and what is to come for me. So, for my
final blog of the term I decided to take a look at the past and talk about some
of the women’s fashion trends from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
Groovy Baby (The 70s)
The seventies was a time for freedom
and self-expression, and technology and innovation were at an all-time high. Some
of the most popular styles of clothing in the seventies included platform
shoes, high waisted jeans, bell bottom pants, tie-dye shirts, hot pants, crochet,
crop tops, and jumpsuits, just to name a few. There was also a fondness of autumn
colors such as burnt orange, mustard yellow, and brown.
Boho Baby (The 80s)
The
eighties was a decade of the Cold War, the introduction of MTV, CD players, and
the release of the first ever Apple computer. Some Baby Boomers were also at
the same age as I am right now. They were fresh out of university and were
considered a lot more materialistic and self-centered than any generation
before them. For me, the fashion in the eighties was a little more questionable, but you decide for yourself. Some of the
most popular fashion trends of this decade were denim, shoulder pads,
miniskirts, leg warmers, fingerless gloves, oversized tops. It was also a time
where neon colors and florals were the norm.
As if Baby (The 90s)
The
nineties was (arguably) one of the best generations to grow up in. Kids would
still play out in the streets all day and people were able to actually connect
offline but there was still a lot of new technology and entertainment that
families enjoyed experiencing together. Friday nights were meant for staying
home and watching all of the best new TV shows (that are still popular today)
like Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Simpsons, Saved by the Bell,
That 70s Show, Full House and many more. Some of the most popular trends were
overalls, mood rings, bike shorts, neon windbreakers, ripped jeans, combat
boots, backless tops, knee high boots and socks, and chokers. Animal print and
plaid were also hugely popular in this decade.
All three of these decades have one thing in common: some of the trends are back
in style!! High waist pants, animal print, denim, crop tops, miniskirts,
jumpers, overalls, and the list goes on. Although some styles may never
comeback (and that's probably for good reason. Example: shoulder pads), the majority of fashion trends have done a 180 and become popular again.
So,
you may be wondering, what on earth does any of this have to do with
advertising media? Well, maybe just like fashion, some of the more traditional
styles of advertising may become popular again. What do you think?

So true that fashion is always making a full circle and eventually becomes popular again. I really wonder what the next thing to come back in to style will be.
